Central Heating
How to Screw the Environment with Central Heating:
"Use an inefficient boiler and leave your heating on all the time"
What's my boiler got to do with it?
Most central heating systems work by heating water or air using a boiler of some description.
Heating and hot water account for around 80% of energy consumption in the home, so there is a lot of potential here to waste energy and Screw the Environment, but it's going to cost you.
Which Boiler do I need?
Condensing boilers convert around 90% of their fuel into heat, compared to 79% for conventional types. So you can only waste 10% of your fuel costs using a modern energy efficeint boiler compared to 21% for other types of boiler and older models.
In some countries, it may be a legal requirement to fit a condensing boiler, so Screwing the Environment may also mean you breaking the law. Are you commited enough?
So I've picked my boiler, now what?
Take advantage of Heating Controls, all modern boilers have them.
This allows your boiler to react to changes in temperature, provide different levels of heat in different rooms, and switch hot water on and off at whatever times are specified by the homeowner, saving a bunch of money and reducing Co2 emissions.
You can also add Thermostatic Valves to your radiators reducing the demand on your boiler.
Set 'incorrectly' Thermostatic Valves and Boiler Heating Controls can waste a ton of energy even with a modern boiler. But, like we said, it's going to cost you. Screwing the Environment this way could get expensive.
You have been warned.
(New feature so digg away!)
